Growing up, I always thought that I had an advantage when it came to technology because of how I grew up. Although I quickly realized that I was not as knowledgeable as had initially thought. There are so many things embedded within each of these tools that I would have never even thought to look for! Before taking Educational Technology, I had only ever used Google Docs and Slides when creating something. I was slightly familiar with forms, but I had never created one, only filled them out. This is why I would consider myself to be a novice in the world of Google. Google Slides is a great tool for both teachers and students in the classroom. It can be easily shared and accessed, and has many aspects built into it that provide guidance on projects. I use SlidesGo to import templates into my slide deck, this helps organize the slides, as well as providing aesthetically pleasing layouts!
This week we focussed on other tools you can find within Google, specifically Forms and Draw. In Google Forms, we looked at choose your own adventure stories, and digital escape rooms. After looking at a few examples, we were prompted to create our own! This is where I realized that I really did not know as much as I thought I did. I was super suprised to see that it can be used for more than just the typical question and answer format. Nikita Chandola shows how to change the response destination in her blog, 10 Advanced Google Forms Tips and Tricks. If you are new to Google Forms, or maybe not as educated as you thought you were, I would definitely give her blog a read!
My learning process for Google Draw was quite the learning process. It took me a few tries to really get the hang of creating the shapes, as I struggled with the outlines in smaller areas - like the individual sections of my glasses in my self portrait. I found it super interesting to see the many different uses for Google Draw! It could be used in a classroom for group collaboration, to create headers, wallpapers, portraits and much more! Kathleen Morris provides step by step for how to create a Google Drawing in her blog, A Guide To Google Drawings For Teachers, Students, And Bloggers. Although I had struggled initially, I am very proud of how my self portrait turned out! Check it out!
The best part about using Google tools is that you can easily access your documents from any device, and it is super easy to encorporate other Google applications into other ones you may be using!
